In this episode on the Scent of Light I will speak on Wisdom, one of the Ten Words to the Creative Spirit, in which my mentor Dr. William Hermanns’ wrote:

Give me Wisdom so I cannot be bribed by intellect.

Preparing for this episode the universe saw it fit to throw me into a medical emergency that caused life and death scenarios presented to me and my family on the way to and recovering from surgery. In the midst of the worry and professional medical care how does wisdom play a role?

As the patient I trusted in the medical system in place to help. I just offered my account of the last couple of days of illness so the admitting doctor could order the appropriate tests. The ER nurse quickly administered a shot for pain and sedation and I was committed to the methodical treatment of my distress. My wife Elaine had much more to deal with as speculations after conversation with the surgeon on my critical condition prompted swirls in her mind on survivability of this kind of mishap and how we would adapt in the future. This terribly distressed her.

Wisdom has always been held out as a precious treasure to attain. Wisdom is held in great esteem by all the religious paths. Yet wisdom is not so tangible. It is not a simple word or memorized verse of scriptures that serves as a magic balm. Wisdom is our evolving relationship with the Cosmos, with life, to be more responsive in each moment to what is real and purposeful as a conscious and conscientious being.

Both Elaine and I required wisdom, each different. I basically needed patience and trust in the healing power within each of my body cells together with the community intervention with the hospital services and family and friends visiting to comfort me. My wife needed the wisdom of quieting the mind, realizing that our intellect can only grasp a small portion of the reality impinging upon us. This humbling of one's own mind is hard to do as emotions and feelings fuel the thoughts, and we identify with this flow of feelings. Wisdom helps us transition from the alarming state of mind to a stillness of thought and emotions. Being mindful of one’s breath, ideally becoming deep and slow breaths with our increased attention, is the best technique I have used in quieting my mind. The support of friends and family helped my wife feel that she was not alone. This in turn comforted me as we are as one in facing life's challenges.

Wisdom was not just my wife and I remembering lessons from the past to better understand the situation, we were aided by those comforting us from Wisdom springing up within them in response to our needs. Wisdom was appearing not as the domain of one person but as a flow of guiding love between the patient and those who cared for him and his partner. No book of Wisdom was needed. No Sage had to appear. No fiery chariot heralding the revelation was required. The only prerequisite of those called to witness the disturbing circumstances was the willingness to be available to be compassionate and comforting. And each provided what they could and were happy to do so, as if they relished the growth of their invisible angel wings.

Wisdom is knowing that we are not alone in facing situations, even those that appear so precarious and seemingly impossible. Resources beyond our intellectual grasp often appear, and realized by us if we have that faith that possibilities exist beyond our knowledge, beyond the worrying prospects.

Therefore let us ask the source of creativity,

Give me Wisdom so I cannot be bribed by intellect.
